Even non-partakers usually wind up hearing how THC is what adult-use consumers love so much about cannabis – but precisely what is THC? We’re here to teach you all about THC so you can make a more informed decision as you peruse the many great cannabis products on the market.

At blüm, we’re always looking for ways to more easily bring cannabis products and experiences to you. For most cannabis lovers, THC is what it’s all about!

What Is THC?

THC is short for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and is the most famous and well-known cannabinoid found in the psychoactive forms of the cannabis plant. It’s the THC in cannabis that most principally cause the enlivened sense of euphoria (i.e., “gets you high”) – but it also has some therapeutic effects.

By acting on the human body’s extensive endocannabinoid system (ECS), THC stimulates certain neurotransmitters to influence pleasure and other sensory, perceptual, and cognitive functions. It also affects the cells in the body directly, where most of its therapeutic qualities come into play.

For whatever purpose you choose, THC becomes activated by heating through either smoking or vaporizing – alternatively, your friendly neighborhood dispensary, aka blüm, can direct you to many of our edible and tincture options.

The Benefits and Effects of THC

Consuming THC induces a relaxed state, sometimes described as giddy or calm, as your mind unwinds and your attention becomes drawn to different bodily sensations or perspectives. Some people, like artists, say that the effects are highly inspiring, and others enjoy it as a way to chill out an overactive mind at the end of the day.

For a more mentally active state (or a “heady” high), look for sativa-dominant blends – while if a relaxed state (or a “body high”) is what you seek, look instead for indica-dominant blends. For a balance of the two, growers also create more balanced strains, colloquially known as “hybrids” – i.e., all strains are hybrids, but here it is meant to refer to mostly equal amounts of indica and sativa.

Of course, everyone is different, and your experience with any strain type will be unique to some degree. Besides the recreational effects of THC, it also has therapeutic benefits. In concert with other cannabinoids (such as the CBD group of compounds), THC has anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful for various ailments. THC is even frequently prescribed for cancer, partly for its potential to slow tumor growth, according to research published by the National Library of Medicine.

There are numerous other therapeutic benefits of THC being studied – far too many to list here. Suffice it to say, it’s as though the plant kingdom has given us a true friend in myriad ways, and promising research into the full extent of THC’s therapeutic value is just beginning.
