Understanding Different Cannabis Strains and Their Effects, Part 2

By March 6, 2018April 27th, 2022No Comments

In our previous article, we helped you gain insight into what marijuana strains are. In order to better understand why they differ from one another, it was also important for you to find out where cannabis came from and read about the differences in physical appearance between indica and sativa strains. Now that you know the basics, the next step would be to learn about the chemical composition of cannabis. Here’s what our experts at best medical marijuana dispensary Orange County have prepared for you!

Chemical composition: cannabinoids and terpenes

There are certain compounds in all varieties of marijuana which contribute to the strain’s potency and flavor. The most important ones are called cannabinoids, particularly THC and CBD.

THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis. It acts as a stimulant and has an uplifting, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-tremor effect. THC levels determine how strong the strain is.

CBD, on the other hand, helps balance out the effects of THC and reduces the mind-altering effects induced by THC. Exuding immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, andneuroprotective properties, CBD is resourceful in treating various medical conditions, while offering little to none psychoactive effects.

There is also a set of molecules based on hydrogen and carbon called terpenoids or terpenes. Terpene combinations are responsible for the color, flavor and aroma of the strain. But there is more to it than that. Terpenes also interact with the cannabinoids, giving each strain unique properties and enhancing the effects that cannabinoids produce. This is called the entourage effect.

Sativa strains

Cannabis sativa varieties have high THC levels and much less CBD content, which is why they are useful for depression, fatigue and other medical condition. Sativas also contain terpenes, such as pinene and limonene. They interact with THC and produce stronger stimulating effect.

Indica strains

Cannabis indica strains have higher CBD content compared to sativa varieties. They contain a terpene called myrcene, which interacts with THC, producing a more sedative effect. This makes indica strains suitable for seizures, insomnia, panic attacks, and anxiety.

Hybrids

There is a myriad of hybrid strains in between the sativa-indica spectrum. Expert breeders combine top indica and sativa strains into superior strains tailored to display the most desirable traits of both parents.

Based on the characteristics they inherit, hybrid strains fall into three main categories: sativa-dominant hybrids, indica-dominant hybrids, and even hybrids (50 percent indica, 50 percent sativa).

Which strain is the right for you?

There are so many strains of cannabis that you may find it difficult to narrow down the list. That’s why reading about the basic properties of terpenes and cannabinoids, as well as learning about different consumption methods can help you find the answer to the fundamental question: Which product is right for me?

Before making a decision, you may want to consider the chemical composition of a particular strain of cannabis:

THC-dominant strains. Primarily chosen by those seeking a powerful euphoric experience, these strains are also helpful for treating pain, anxiety, and depression. Some consumers may feel anxious after consuming THC-dominant strains, though, so they use strains with higher CBD levels.

CBD-dominant strains. These strains have low THC content and are commonly used by people who are sensitive to THC or by those who want to make the most out of the healing properties of CBD without experiencing the high produced by psychoactive THC.

Balanced THC/CBD strains. With balanced levels of CBD and THC, these cannabis strains can provide symptom relief along with mild euphoria.
