Homemade Cannabis Donuts: The Recipe
Our glaze has quite a bit of THC, so we’re leaving it up to you whether you want your donuts to contain cannabis or not. You’re welcome to use standard THC-free butter from the grocery store, or swap in 4 tablespoons of homemade cannabutter.
This recipe, adapted from The Domestic Rebel, makes 12 donuts.
For the buttermilk donuts, you will need:
4 tbsp butter, melted (for a stronger high, substitute cannabutter)
1 cup sugar
1 egg yolk
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp salt
3 ½ cups cake flour
¾ cup buttermilk
Extra flour, for dusting
6 cups vegetable oil
Large mixing bowl
Electric mixer with dough hook or paddle
Round pastry cutter
Start by adding the butter (or cannabutter) and sugar into your large mixing bowl. Combine them using the electric mixer for 30 seconds.
Take the two whole eggs and add them one at a time, mixing well in between.
Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract. Mix again.
Add baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt to the bowl. Combine them using the electric mixer.
Add 1 cup of flour and ¼ cup of buttermilk and combine using the electric mixer. Repeat until all the flour and buttermilk is mixed into the dough.
Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
When you’re ready, take your large saucepan and add the vegetable oil. Heat to 325F, using the candy thermometer to check the temperature.
Dust your working space with the extra flour, and roll out your dough to ½-inch thickness. Use the pastry cutter to cut out your donuts.
Carefully drop each donut into your oil, and fry each side until golden-brown. Let cool on a paper towel-lined baking sheet.
Cannabis Chocolate Donut Glaze
This simple glaze has 2 ingredients: dark chocolate and cannabis-infused coconut oil. It solidifies quickly, so your donuts will be ready to eat ASAP. Just make sure they’re fully cooled before you pour on the glaze—if they’re too warm, it could melt right off!
For the chocolate cannabis donut glaze, you will need:
3 cups dark chocolate chips
1/3 cup cannabis-infused coconut oil
Double boiler (or any heat-safe bowl placed in a water-filled saucepan)
Put all ingredients into your double boiler (or similar setup) and whisk together as they melt.
When the mixture is glossy and smooth, begin dipping the tops of your donuts in the glaze. Once each donut is covered, set it aside to cool.
Enjoy immediately. Any leftover donuts can be frozen and thawed out for later enjoyment.
